Sewing

Have you received a new qualification or rank badge recently? Well, here comes the dreaded part of any promotion within cadets… sewing. Sewing has been the dread of cadets since we were initially formed as drill associations dating back to 1861, probably. Sewing is a tedious task that requires the investment of time, energy, planning, and coordination. Given that it is a not so practiced, even by today’s standards, we have put together a few resources to help you out.

Remember:

As a cadet, it is YOUR responsibility to sew on your badges, not your parents. YOU are a cadet, not mom, dad, or your gram.

The Basics:

This website will be able to show you the step by step instructions, with pictures, on how to make basic stitches.

Where do my badges go?

Much like everything else in our program, we strive for uniformity and precision. Here are three diagrams to help you with the positioning, placement, and measurements for your badges.

In the figure below, badges on the left sleeve are positioned based on the measurements provided. These badges, in order from shoulder to cuff are, the unit identifier, the Royal Canadian Army Cadet (RCAC) Badge, the National Star of Excellence (NSE) level badge, the first aid badge, the physical fitness badge, and the marksmanship badge.

The diagram below is for the ranks of Lance Corporal (LCpl), Corporal (Cpl), Master Corporal (MCpl), and Sergeant (Sgt). To make it easier, all of the ranks that use the placement guide below involve the Gold Arrows, known as chevrons. In order from shoulder to cuff, the badges are, the unit identifier, the RCAC badge, the Corporal rank, the General Training badge, and the Green Star qualification badge.

The diagram below is for the ranks of Warrant Officer (WO), Master Warrant Officer (MWO), and Chief Warrant Officer (CWO). To make this list easier, all of the ranks that use the placement guide below are include ranks that have the Tudor Crown instead of chevrons. In order from shoulder to cuff, the badges are, the unit identifier, the RCAC badge, the Warrant Officer rank badge, the maple leaf exchange to England badge (St. George’s Cross / flag of England), the staff cadet badge (Maple leaf with wreath), the Air Rifle Marksmanship Instructor badge (crossed rifles and wreath), the General Training badge (little tree / arrow), the Basic Marksmanship Course badge (crossed rifles), and the Gold Star Qualification badge.
